One type is new copper waste, which is produced during the copper industrial production process. The business of a metallurgical plant is called "home scrap" or "runaround". Waste copper scraps from copper processing plants and those returned directly to the supply plant are called "industrial waste copper", "spot waste copper" or "prompt" new waste copper.

The other category is old copper scrap, which is used after the discarded items, such as from old buildings and transportation systems or disassembled called old copper scrap. Copper and copper-based materials, whether exposed or wrapped in the final product, can be recycled at all stages of the product life cycle. In general, new waste copper for recycling accounts for more than half. About a third of all waste copper is returned to the market in the form of refined copper after reprocessing, and another two-thirds is reused in the form of non-refined copper or copper alloys. The precondition of direct use of waste copper is strict classification and stacking and strict sorting. The direct application of waste copper has the advantages of simplified process, simple equipment, high recovery rate, low energy consumption, low cost and light pollution. The amount of scrap copper directly applied generally reflects the regeneration level of copper in a country. In contrast, the direct utilization rate of waste copper in China is low, about 200,000 T per year, accounting for only 30%~40% of the total amount of waste copper, and the production of brass processing material is mostly operated by township enterprises, greatly reducing economic benefits, and in energy consumption, environmental protection, bring future trouble.
